Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology

Microneedling is an innovative treatment that helps patients minimize common signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. Through automated micro-needling, many patients at the Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology practice can achieve anti-aging results similar to many popular laser treatments. Micro-needling also offers the additional benefit of time-efficient, in-office treatments.

Benefits of Micro-Needling

The automated micro-needling process is also known as a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). By stimulating the production of collagen and elastin with a topical Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a substance naturally found in the human body, micro-needling can effectively rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. This process triggers the body’s natural healing and repair systems and can ultimately reduce signs of:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Hyper-pigmentation
  • Hypo-pigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Scars resulting from physical injury

This procedure can be performed on facial skin as well as the neck, décolleté, arms, legs, abdomen, back, and hands. Micro-needling typically takes 15-30 minutes to perform, depending on the number of areas being treated. The results from micro-needling typically begin to show a few days after treatment and, as the body’s natural collagen regenerates, results should continue to improve for weeks afterward. Following micro-needling treatment, patients can achieve smoother, younger-looking skin. Some of Dr. Crawford’s patients elect for multiple treatments throughout the year to maximize the cosmetic benefits.

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma utilizes your own natural platelets to instruct the body to create new collagen to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone and texture and soften aged skin with no down time. PRP can improve the appearance of acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks as well.

How does it work?

A small vial of blood is taken from your arm – less than that normally taken for routine blood tests. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells and plasma. The process concentrates the platelet count to about 4X normal. The physician or medical aesthetician will then layer the plasma on to the skin and microneedle over it to enhance penetration. For some patients, a provider may inject the plasma into deeper layers of the skin to add volume and to fill deeper folds. The rejuvenation process begins rapidly and there is very little to no down-time depending on the intensity and depth of the treatment selected by your provider. With more aggressive treatments, there may be some minor pinpoint bleeding during the procedure. Most individuals may return to work and normal activities the day after the procedure with perhaps only minimal residual redness that may last a day or two.

PRP for the under eyes – Cosmetic

PRP for the under eyes is a desired treatment for dark circles, mild hollowing, and wrinkling around the eye. It is a natural treatment, as it is derived entirely from your own blood. During the procedure, a small sample of blood is taken and then it is spun down to separate platelets. The platelet-rich portion of the blood is reinjected, as this contains growth factors that stimulates the body’s natural wound healing response and stimulates collagen production in the area. The procedure generally requires 3 or more sessions spread apart by a month for optimal results. It can take a few weeks to see results with each injection as it takes time for the PRP to increase collagen production. PRP under the eyes typically results in significant improvements to the quality and pigment of the skin in this area. For more significant volume loss, PRP can be combined with filler under the eyes or in the upper cheeks depending on each person’s needs.
