Through the ages, thick luxurious hair has been associated with beauty, youth, and good health. Consequently, our patients who experience hair loss (also called “alopecia”) often feel depressed, anxious or experience a loss of self-esteem. At the Pennsylvania Centre for Dermatology, we understand the importance of properly evaluating every patient with hair loss. Sometimes, there are correctable medical conditions that can be treated (e.g. thyroid disease). However, in many cases, hair loss is due to genetic factors outside of your control. There are many potential treatment options; however, some can be painful, have a high cost, or carry unacceptable side effects. When other options are either not effective or not acceptable to our patients, some patients may elect to have a safe and cost-effective treatment called “Platelet-Rich Plasma” (also called “PRP”). This treatment involves use of a fraction of your own blood that is rich in stimulatory growth factors. The procedure is relatively quick, and involves small injections of this PRP solution into the affected areas of the scalp. The treatments may have the following beneficial effects:
- Increases blood supply to the follicle
- Increases shaft size (thickness)
- Triggers and maintains the growth phase
- Controls hair growth cycle
- Decreases hair loss
HOW PRP WORKS
Platelets contain many healing growth factors. Those growth factors are like signal callers that give instructions to your tissue to regenerate and multiply. This has led different fields of medicine to utilize PRP for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue.
Now doctors have discovered new benefits for hair thickening and regrowth. With PRP for hair, your growth factors and stem cells work together to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jumpstarting dormant hair back into the growth stage.
PRP FOR HAIR LOSS
This quick injection involves the collection and concentration of your body’s own platelets using a very easy three-step process.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I know if I am a good candidate for PRP?
Please call to schedule a medical evaluation for hair loss to assure that you would be a good candidate for this procedure.
How many treatments are required?
Treatment will vary based on your need. However, most patients will need an initial regimen of 4 sessions spaced approximately 1 month apart. After this initial regimen, we usually recommend maintenance treatments 2 – 4 times a year.
Is the PRP for hair restoration process time consuming?
No, collecting the PRP usually takes 10-15 minutes. And the PRP treatment itself is even faster. It often takes as little as 3-5 minutes.
Does the procedure hurt?
There may be some discomfort during the procedure. Some patients may prefer to have a topical anesthetic applied before the procedure to help minimize discomfort.
Is there a recovery time?
There is no downtime or a long recovery process. We recommend that you avoid the use of any hair dye or other salon or chemical treatments for 48 hours after the procedure is performed.
When will I start seeing results?
You will start to notice results in about 4 to 8 months after your PRP hair regrowth procedure. This follows the normal hair growth cycle. With six to twelve months most patients will see significant improvement in volume and quality of their hair growth.
Is this a cure for baldness?
PRP is not a cure for baldness (Androgenic Alopecia). This procedure does not correct the underlying genetic programming that causes hair thinning. However, there is evidence that regular treatments can help increase hair density, and at the very least slow down the hair loss process.
