Intense Pulsed Light “Photofacial”
Intense Pulsed Light (also commonly called “IPL” , “photofacial” or “photorejuvenation”) is a treatment involving delivery of focused high energy light on the skin. IPL treatments are relatively painless, quick and extremely safe. The intent of these procedures is to improve the appearance of sun spots, discoloration, rosacea, and photoaging of the skin. Most patients will require a series of treatments (typically two to four sessions) spaced apart by a few weeks. The treatments are typically painless, extremely safe, and require no down-time. The most common areas for treatment include the face, hands, neck and upper chest.
How Does It Work?
All laser and light-based rejuvenation procedures rely on the scientific principle of “selective photothermolysis”. It is well known that certain structures – such as blood, melanin, water, and collagen – preferentially absorb certain wavelengths of light. By utilizing devices that emit light at specific wavelengths (Lasers) or specific ranges of wavelengths (Intense Pulsed Light devices), we can preferentially target unwanted structures, while leaving the healthy overlying and surrounding skin intact.
What can be treated?
- Sun spots / Discoloration: Photofacial treatments can be used to help even skin color and remove unsightly dark spots.
- Skin Rejuvenation: Photorejuvenation treatments help improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin, improving texture, color and fine lines.
- Rosacea/Facial Vessels: IPL can be used to target unwanted facial blood vessels as well as reduce background redness and flushing.
- Acne: Although not a first-line therapy for acne, IPL treatments have been demonstrated to improve acne, especially for individuals who prefer to avoid oral antibiotics and other systemic medications used to treat acne.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The total number of treatments is somewhat variable, and depends on the nature of the condition. However, most people require from 3 to 4 treatments for optimal results. Maintenance may require a periodic “touch up” (for example, after an initial treatment regimen of 3-4 sessions, many patients will return annually for maintenance treatments).
